Sorghum is used for grain, fiber and fodder. The plants are cultivated in warmer climates worldwide. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia.
Sorghum grows in harsh environments where other crops do not grow well. It is well adapted to grow in hot, arid or semiarid areas. It is usually grown without application of any fertilizers or other inputs by a multitude of small-holder farmers in many countries. For some impoverished regions of the world, sorghum remains a principal source of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals.
There are four groups of sorghum: grain sorghums (such as milo), grass sorghums (for pasture and hay), sweet sorghums (used to produce sorghum syrups), and broom corn (for brooms and brushes).
Grain sorghum is the third most important cereal crop grown in the United States and the fifth most important cereal crop grown in the world.
I am excited to be growing sorghum for the first time this year.
